What is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy

Nearly 7% of the United States population is diagnosed with depression. This means that more than 16 million Americans struggle through long days, sleepless nights, and a variety of other detrimental symptoms. While depression can be treated with medication and counseling, some patients do not respond well to these treatments, leaving them to struggle with the seemingly-hopeless weight of depression.

At Psych Associates of Maryland, we understand your depression and look to provide resources for you when you’re at your lowest point. That’s why we provide TMS Therapy, an increasingly popular treatment for depression. Depression can be tough to deal with and can impact your social and professional life. Recently, with change of management, offering the most effective modern therapies became core to our care.

TMS Therapy is a non-invasive procedure to help fight depression using a magnetic pulse to stimulate brain cells that control mood.

Why TMS Therapy?

Benefits of Treatment

TMS is a depression treatment whose technological origins date back to 1985. It uses a magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, which improves symptoms of depression.

The reason TMS Therapy is so effective can be explained through the root causes of depression. Depression can be defined as a chemical imbalance in the brain caused by underactivation of the frontal cortex: the forward-facing portion of the brain responsible for controlling mood and personality. When this part of the brain is underactive, it is not able to properly utilize chemicals—typically serotonin and dopamine—to give you feelings of happiness, motivation, and excitement. Studies have shown that with TMS Therapy, 83% of patients have significantly gotten better through treatment.

If your depression is no longer responding to medications or therapy, TMS might be a good solution for you. TMS therapy has been shown to work when therapy and medications are not relieving a client’s depression.
